Galleria Dallas, an iconic shopping and lifestyle center with a unique collection of more than 200 retailers, restaurants and experiences, has been named the No. 3 Retail Center Experience by Chain Store Age in its annual listing of the top 10.
Galleria Dallas, which is managed by Trademark Property Company, came in behind No. 1, the Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio, and No. 2, American Dream in The Meadowlands, New Jersey, in the magazine’s list of retail centers focused not just on shopping excellence, but on creating spaces and places for human engagement. “Retail centers used to be places where people would go to acquire,” said Chain Store Age real estate editor Al Urbanski. “Today they’re places where people go to abide.”
“With our Skating Center, Galleria Dallas has long been known as an experiential center as well as a home of a wide variety of restaurants and retail,” said Angie Freed, general manager of Galleria Dallas. “The past year, we’ve added to that dimension with art installations, fashion exhibits and immersive Instagram-museum experiences like Snowday and POP!”
Snowday Dallas attracted more than 16,000 people from 770 ZIP Codes to Galleria Dallas during the holiday season.
Chain Store Age noted Galleria Dallas’ skylit design inspired by Italy’s oldest active shopping center, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and its Christmas celebration that features a 95-foot-tall tree in the center of its ice-skating rink, which draws more holiday skaters than New York’s Rockefeller Center. Other factors that assisted in Galleria Dallas’ top-three ranking include the virtual Talent Talks series, the 1980s-focused fashion exhibit “She’s Got the Look,” the Black Fashion Movement pop-up, the gallery wall that supports a different community organization each month and the popular Alley Market featuring women-owned small businesses that was held in May and will be presented again in October.
Since 2017, Chain Store Age has called for nominations from retail real estate developers for centers that are paradigms of physical retail’s new wave: Places that provide consumers with popular food and beverage spots, green spaces, local providers of goods and services — and even residences, workplaces, and medical services.
The top 10 Retail Center Experiences of 2021 are rounded out by No. 4, Tuscan Village – Salem, New Hampshire; No. 5, National Harbor – Washington, D.C.; No. 6, La Centerra at Cinco Ranch, Katy, Texas; No. 7, Downtown Silver Spring – Silver Spring, Maryland; No. 8, Avalon, Alpharetta, Georgia; No. 9, Mellody Farm – Vernon Hills, Illinois; and No. 10, Crocker Park – Westlake, Ohio.
